A heavy dump of snow left nearly 1,000 residents in southeastern Manitoba without power Tuesday morning.

The outages affected people in St. Adolphe, Falcon Lake and Sprague. Hydro crews in the area were kept busy with power lines downed by fallen branches and heavy snow.

"We brought in crews from some of the other areas to help out this morning just because of the widespread nature of it," said Manitoba Hydro's Glenn Schneider.

The power outages were especially hard on rural residents.

"When you live out here and you don't have power, power pumps don't work. So you have no water as well as heat," said Stew McLachlan, a Lorette resident.

The heavy snowfall has also affected road conditions in the province, with multiple collisions reported.

In Winnipeg, clean up from the dump of snow is expected to cost the city about $300,000. Nearly 150 pieces of equipment are expected to be used for plowing, salting and sidewalk clearing.
