Cops lay close to 10,000 charges in distracted driving
The Canadian Press
Toronto Police have begun riding city streetcars in a bid to catch drivers talking and texting.
TORONTO Toronto police say they have laid almost 10,000 charges during a week-long distracted driving blitz.
That's up from close to 9,000 charged during last year's campaign.
This year's blitz included 129 charges for a display screen visible to the driver and 1,705 charges for using a hand-held communication device.
There were also 77 charges for use of a hand-held entertainment device and 121 for careless driving.
Police say they will continue to take aim at all forms of distracted driving, such as texting, eating or adjusting a GPS unit.
