A 19-year-old male and a teenage girl are in hospital after being shot outside a Toronto public school on Thursday in a series of events police are still trying to piece together.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to the area of Jane Street and Grandravine Drive at about 10 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.

Police said a man was shot multiple times as he exited a nearby community centre and a girl, believed to be 14 years old, was shot once in the leg while standing on the front lawn of the adjacent Oakdale Park Middle School.

"It would appear that someone was waiting for someone to come out of the community centre," Insp. Randy Carter told reporters on Thursday. "When our now-injured person came out of the community centre he was the target of gun violence.

"There was a further issue of gun violence that left our young female injured."

The male victim was rushed to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. Carter said the male victim is currently in stable condition.

The girl was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting was just outside the middle school, which went into lockdown after the incident and placed into hold and secure mode for the remainder of the day.

Nearby Topcliff and Yorkwoods public schools were released from hold and secure mode Thursday afternoon.

Sherry Schwartz-Maltz, spokesperson for the TDSB, said they were making social workers available to the 560 Oakdale students.

Police also created a staging area nearby where concerned parents could go to receive up-to-date information about their children.

A witness told CTV Toronto that she saw a man jump out of a silver car and fire several shots at another man. When the victim fell to the ground, the witness said the man kept shooting.

The witness claims the man then turned his gun on a pair of girls across the street, when one of them started screaming, before jumping back into the car and driving away.

While Carter was hesitant to describe the incident as a targeted shooting, he told reporter that it did not appear that the girl was a primary target.

"We are still investigating to see what the motive was for this shooting, and that will help us to determine whether or not there were people who were targeted," Carter said.

Carter said that police are canvassing the area are looking for a tall young man who fled the scene in a silver vehicle.
