Toronto officer faces second assault charge from G20

A Toronto police officer facing an assault charge stemming from last summer's G20 protests has been charged in a second case from the same day.

Const. Babak Andalib-Goortani is facing charges stemming from an attack with a weapon on a woman on June 26, when more than 1,000 demonstrators took to the streets as Toronto hosted the G20 Summit.

Toronto police allege Andalib-Goortani assaulted a woman by hitting her with a baton, in the area of Queen's Park.

He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault with a weapon, following an investigation into a complaint received by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director.

Andalib-Goortani, 30, has been a Toronto police officer for more than three years.

He has already been charged with assault with a weapon in the alleged beating of G20 protester Adam Nobody.

Nobody claimed he suffered a fractured eye and other injuries after being roughed up by officers at the Ontario legislature on June 26. YouTube video had been shot of the incident, in which Nobody is seen being swarmed and at least one officer can be seen making a punching motion.

Andalib-Goortani was charged in December. Court proceedings in that case have been put over until Feb. 28.

He is scheduled to appear in a College Park courthouse to face the new charge on Monday, March 7.
