A new survey suggests most, but not all, Regina residents are satisfied with the city's police service.

The Community Perceptions of the Regina Police Service survey found more than three-quarters of respondents ranked the overall quality of the police service as very good to excellent.

However, the survey also found dissatisfaction with the police service among some aboriginals, recent victims of crime and people who had contact with police in the past year.

"Respondents who had contact with the police tended to have less overall trust and satisfaction with the RPS or perceived the RPS less favourably than those who did not," concludes the survey, conducted by researchers at the University of Regina.

"This is a significant issue given that 42.9 per cent of respondents reported having some contact with police in the prior year."

While more than half of those surveyed indicated that the Regina Police Service did a "good job," none of the aboriginal respondents shared that view.

On a scale of one to five, aboriginals ranked their overall satisfaction with the police service at 2.14, on average, compared to the city-wide ranking of 3.94.

"The results revealed that First Nations and Métis respondents had far less confidence and trust in the police and were more likely to be dissatisfied with the treatment that they received from the RPS," the researchers said.

The survey also found aboriginal respondents were more likely to report being a victim of crime than all of those surveyed at 67 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.

More than 10 per cent of First Nations and Métis respondents reported being arrested, compared to only about two per cent of the city-wide sample.

Just over 500 Regina residents participated in the telephone survey, which was conducted last August and September.
