MONTREAL Ngnan Wong Yee and her husband Poom Huy Shuy were walking along Ceres Street in Dollard-des-Ormeaux at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday night when, only metres from their home, a car hit them from behind.
Yee, 73, was declared dead at the scene, her husband was rushed to intensive car.
Yvan Grandmaison, 40, was arrested after the collision. Montreal police officers smelled alcohol and despite passing a blood-alcohol test, they say Grandmaison was under the influence.
At the Quebec Superior Court on Wednesday, Grandmaison was charged with one count of impaired driving causing death and one count of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Neighbours heard the sound of screeching tires and an impact when they went to see what had happened. One neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told CTV News that the driver appeared to be out of control.
"Next thing you know there's a man just comes out of his car and he was just screaming and yelling—I guess he was in shock," said the neighbour.
Police and first responders arrived within minutes but there was little that could be done for the wife.
"The driver was arrested on site following the smell of alcohol on him," said Montreal constable Yannick Ouimet. "Once taken to the detention centre they determined that he was under the influence of either medication or drugs."
In court on Wednesday afternoon, Grandmaison's lawyer refused to speak to reporters. The crown is objecting to granting Grandmaison bail—considering him a danger to public safety.
"The accused has been convicted of an offence of a similar nature. That's part of why we're objecting to his release—part of it," said crown prosecutor Dennis Galiatsatos.
Grandmaison is due back in court tomorrow.
