A local senior took her frustration with poor living conditions to the Alberta Legislature Tuesday.

Beverly Munro, 65, has been living in the long term care facility at the Edmonton General Hospital for 8 months, she documented her living conditions with photographs and presented them to provincial politicians.

The pictures show numerous examples of disrepair at the facility including doors that don't open, tarps covering areas in the cafeteria, and a sign on an elevator warning that it may fail.

Provincial New Democrat leader Brian Mason, who saw Munro's pictures, called the conditions "absolutely appalling"

Munro said she has been frightened after being stuck in the elevator at the facility more than once.

"In telling you when you're trapped in [the elevator] I could've chewed the door off that's how scared I was."

Health minister Fred Horne admitted during question period Tuesday that the long-term facility at the General Hospital was in bad shape.

"I have no difficulty Mr. Speaker in conceding that it is one of the older long term care facilities in Alberta," Minister Horne said. "In addition to building new spaces we have invested heavily in refurbishing old spaces we will continue to open spaces."

An Edmonton senior advocacy group is concerned that the new spaces the Minister talked about may mean a higher cost of living.

The group plans to raise concerns about the possibility of increasing the maximum fee facilities can charge residents on Wednesday.

The fee is currently capped at $1700 a month, but some critics believe the government may allow the maximum charge to as much as double in order to encourage the construction of more private facilities.
