RCMP are investigating after three people were killed in a two-vehicle collision on a rural highway southwest of Edmonton.

Breton RCMP said the collision occurred just before 7:30 p.m. Monday near the community of Alsike on Highway 39 and Range Road 40.

According to police investigators, a two-door car was headed south on Range Road 40, when it was hit by a truck, which was headed eastbound on Highway 39.

The small car was carrying four people, three males were pronounced dead on the scene, the fourth person, and only female, was taken to hospital from the scene by STARS.

The driver, and only occupant of the truck suffered minor injuries in the crash.

An RCMP collision analyst has been called to the scene to investigate.

It's believed visibility and road conditions are not a factor in the crash.

Traffic headed north and south at the junction between Highway 39 and Range Road 40 is controlled by stop signs.

The identities of the deceased have not been released, as police work to notify next-of-kin.
