A cosmic fireball streaked across the Alberta sky revealing itself to onlookers as a dazzling flash of light that disappeared as quickly as it arrived.

The massive fireball lit up the night sky at about 8:45 Tuesday night.

Sky cameras were set up by astronomers to watch for just this sort of event.

The flash of light which witnesses say was green and brighter than the full moon was a meteor entering our atmosphere.

Astronomers say the meteor broke up somewhere near North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

People all across the prairies reported seeing the meteor.

"It's a bit of magic in the sense that you can be out walking your dog and looking up and seeing this beautiful brilliant fire ball in the sky and knowing that's a little bit of our solar system landing on our planet," said Don Hladiuk, Astronomer.

A similar, slightly larger fireball exploded just to the west of where this one disintegrated in 2009.

The Buzzard Coulee meteor set off a massive search for meteorites in 2009.

Scientists say it is unusual for two fireball meteors to fall in the same area in such a small space of time, but they maintain it is just a coincidence.
