STRATFORD, P.E.I. — A nature conservation group has acquired two offshore islands near Prince Edward Island.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada says environmentalists have been trying to protect Governor's Island and Reynold's Island for 40 years.

The announcement was made today by federal cabinet minister Gail Shea and provincial Environment Minister Janice Sherry.

Governor's Island in Hillsborough Bay is mostly wooded land that covers 34 hectares.

The shallow water around the island is used by one of eastern P.E.I's largest great blue heron colonies.

Reynold's Island in Murray Harbour features 12 hectares of salt marshes, sandy beaches and wooded areas used by various colonial nesting birds.
